Happy first day of winter. Always my favorite day because starting on the 22nd, the day start getting longer again. This polar bear was photographed back in November of 2010, standing on a sea ice in the Hudson Bay up in northern Manitoba, Canada. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 290mm) ISO 800, f/8 at 1/640th of a second.
Me too. I remember at the time they were saying that at current rates of decline they had 50 years or something like that. Our wildlife is disappearing fast. Here’s to the those trying to slow the rates of decline.

magnificent animal and photo
Thanks Robert. I need to get back and visit them again while they’re still with us.
Do they walk erect as pictured or do they drop to all fours when they want to get somewhere fast?
Mostly on all fours, but occasionally they stand like that to survey the situation.
I wonder what the ice situation now, 15 years later. Beautiful shot.

I love that you captured the bear standing upright. Very lovely image, Sean!
Thanks Sue. Standing is always the money shot of portraits (and a bit of breath is good too).
